One Little Word: 2016

January 13, 2016 By Talya Tate Boerner

there's just something about writing with a pencil!

Yay! I’m back. My blog has been down for three days due to host server problems beyond my control (nasty hackers!), but I’m back. While you may have appreciated the break from my constant ramblings, it was a long three days for me. Having all my blog work in limbo was a helpless feeling. On the other hand, I did tackle my to-do list including a few things I’d been ignoring for a while. I even went completely old school and did a bit of writing using a regular pencil. Well, my pencils aren’t that regular—they’re pretty fancy, really. But today I’m back, and I’m talking about my One Little Word for 2016.

I love the idea of choosing One Little Word and focusing on it throughout the year. My friend, Jacqueline Wolven, put me on to this idea last year. She’s been doing it for a while which is likely one reason she always does good work. In 2015, my One Little Word was FOCUS. Focus turned out to be the perfect word for me. I focused on my writing, finished my book, found a publisher. I know you’re tired of hearing about The Accidental Salvation of Gracie Lee. Sorry (not sorry).

I contemplated my One Little Word for a while. I think it’s a powerful thing. When you throw a commitment out into the universe and concentrate on change, things begin to happen. Sort of a ā€œbuild it and they will comeā€ concept.

The power of positive thinking?

So.

My one little word for 2016 is GROW.

GROW - my one little word

I love this word for lots of reasons including the gardening connotation. But I also believe it’s a good word for me to focus on in 2016 because I want to grow my skills as a writer. Expand my reach and dig deeper.

Think back to when you were a kid. Remember how it felt to truly believe anything and everything was possible? Each day was brighter and fresher than the one before, and your heart automatically told you the answers to every question because you felt no fear. We were growing and learning and soaking up the world around us—in school, at church, from our parents.

We each knew the answer to what do you want to be when you grow up?

Grow.

That’s my one little word. What’s yours?

I think everyone needs one.
